A Michelin Bib Gourmand Tonkatsu Near Tokyo Tower

There are various access routes to Tonkatsu Iwai. You may approach it either from Tokyo Metro Daimon, Shiba Koen, or JR Hamamatsucho Station. It is near the Shiba-Daimon intersection and not far from Tokyo Tower. It is somewhat difficult to find since it is located on the second floor of multi-tenanted building. Hint: look for a long-line running up the stairs.

Tonkatsu Iwai uses a special brand of pork called “Roppaku Kurobuta” from Kagoshima Prefecture. While the fatty cuts of meat can be savory and tasty, excess fat is removed before deep-frying in blended oil that is a mixture of two kinds of lards.

Perfection is the goal at Tonkatsu Iwai. The chef accurately calculates the amount of time it takes to get to a customer’s table while the meat continues to cook from the residual heat. The result is an exquisite tonkatsu. Each cutlet is as thick as 4 cm. The meat goes well with a variety of seasonings such as homemade sauce, rock salt, lemon, wasabi, and Kagoshima soy sauce. Find the seasoning(s) that suit you best.

Once you have tasted one of the finest tonkatsu dishes, you will understand why people form a long line outside the restaurant.
