A Hidden Chicken Katsu Eatery

The restaurant is tucked deep in a back alley in Dogenzaka, a brief walk past the Shibuya 109 shopping mall. The exact location of the building can be confusing so it is recommended that you consult a google map.

Go up the stairs of a multi-tenanted building to the second floor and walk through the dimly lit corridor. At the corner, you will find a sign above the entrance door as well as a white noren (curtain) underneath it. The sign says torikatsu in Japanese and chicken in English. The restaurant has a counter and one table. This famous restaurant has been featured in popular television shows and magazines. It is definitely a special place catering to those in the know.

Torikatsu Chicken opened in 1977 by the mother of the current owner, Mr. Sekiguchi. The decision to start this unusual business was based on the observation that, although there are many tonkatsu restaurants in the vicinity, there are very few that specialize in torikatsu. One can't help but notice the hand-written menu posted on the wall in Japanese. When the restaurant first opened, the number of breaded and deep-fried items on the menu were few, but, over time, the number of offerings has gradually increased so that now there are more than 10 items on the menu including non-chicken dishes.

The restaurant's main sales point is that you can order any combination of dishes at a surprisingly low price.  Starting with two combinations for only 650 yen, three may be had for 800 yen, or four for 1,000 yen. Take your pick from tonkatsu (pork cutlet), torikatsu, hamukatsu (ham cutlet), ika-fry (squid), aji-fry (mackerel), korokke-fry (croquette), and more. The restaurant encourages customers to choose three to four cutlets besides torikatsu.

If you desire more rice, pay an additional 150 yen for omori (large size portion) or 200 yen for an okawari (second normal serving).
