Mikawaya is a teishoku (classic Japanese set meal) restaurant specializing in agemono (deep-fried) dishes. The restaurant is located not far from Gonpachi at the Nishi-Azabu Crossing. From the intersection, walk down Gaien Nishi-dori Avenue in the direction of Aoyama Cemetery and Hardy Barracks for about a minute. Peek in and you’ll see a compact interior with counter seating for five people facing the kitchen and three tables, each with four-person capacity.
The restaurant, originally opened in 1930 as a meat store, has been serving teishoku since 1990. The restaurant is open for three hours from 11:30 to 14:30 on four weekdays (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). It is best to get there as early as possible as they close when they run out of rice.
The most popular item on the menu is the mixed-set meal. The meal is comprised of generous portions of deep-fried dishes – kenchi-katsu (ground meat cutlet), chicken cutlet, ham cutlet, croquette – with a side of cabbage, rice, miso soup, and pickles. Cabbage, rice, and miso soup may be freely refilled. The oval-shaped menchikatsu is of the highest quality, with juices overflowing from the inside as soon as you take a bite. The batter is very crispy and has a spicy flavor with black pepper.
