Matsukiya is located in an alleyway very close to Dogenzaka Ue Police Box. From Shibuya Station start walking towards Shibuya 109 shopping mall and walk up Dogenzaka hill until you reach a police box. Look for a sign with a restaurant name in Japanese characters out front and walk up to the second floor of the building.
Established in 1880, Matsukiya is considered one of the most historic restaurants in Shibuya. Formerly, there were mostly company workers at the restaurant, but recently the number of individual foreign customers has increased as a result of favorable publicity in Lonely Planet Tokyo. In addition to tables and tatami rooms, there is a stylish bar where you can enjoy alcohol at the counter.
During lunch hours, the restaurant offers a Sukiyaki Teishoku (i.e. a set menu) for an affordable 1,200 yen. For dinner, you will need to choose from their omakase or course menu. The omakase menu – a choice of either sukiyaki or shabu shabu – comes with an appetizer, a choice of rice or kishimen (a type of flat noodle), and a dessert. We recommend you order the course menu that comes with an appetizer, sashimi, two types of tsumami (small appetizers for nibbling with a drink), and a choice of rice or kishimen. The sashimi lineup changes daily as the chef only serves the best that can be procured on that day. There is also a choice of the pan-fried ishiyaki steak in the event you prefer an alternative to the classic menu.
If you order a shabu shabu dish, you will cook it yourself; sukiyaki will be cooked for you by an employee at your table. The type of sukiyaki served is Kanto style which features warishita (a type of sweet sauce) created by mixing sugar, shoyu, mirin and sake. The warishita is simmered along with classical ingredients: Ohmi beef, grilled tofu, mizuna (water greens), negi (onions), shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, and shirataki noodles. Dip the cooked beef and vegetables into a dish with raw egg and enjoy the sweet but mild taste.
