Hayashi is located in the back streets of Shibuya, a short walk from Mark City, a building complex directly connected to Shibuya Station.
You might find difficulty in locating the restaurant, especially since there are no English signs. Look for a stylish wooden signboard with a ramen bowl illustration and a white noren (curtain) hanging underneath. At lunchtime, you will very likely encounter a queue in front of the restaurant. There are only 10 seats at the counter overlooking the open kitchen.
As you enter, you will see a vending machine on the right-hand side. Select your order from the machine. There are only three menus at Hayashi: plain ramen, ajitama ramen (with soft-boiled egg), and yakibuta ramen (with pork chashu and a soft-boiled egg). The most orthodox of the ramen selections is the plain ramen, but, if you are up for a meat feast, try ordering yakibuta ramen. The golden-colored soup is a combination of a double-broth meat-based soup made with chicken and pork bones and a seafood-based soup made with dried prawns, dried bonito, dried sardines, and kelp. The noodles used for all three menus are straight and medium-thick.
Although all the ramen noodles displayed at the vending machine are soy flavored, you may substitute an off-menu, salt-based soup. If that is your desire, please make a request when you hand in the ticket from the vending machine. Unlike other ramen restaurants, other substitutions are not available. One cannot, for example, order an omori (large-size) portion. Side toppings and rice are not available either.
The restaurant has very short hours of operation from 11:30 to 15:30 or when they run out of soup.
