Michishirube is located on the back street of Omoide-no-Nukemichi (literally, memory bypass) near Golden Gai in Kabukicho.
The surrounding area, which is a little seedy, is filled with time-worn establishments such as Japanese taverns and bars. It is one of the few restaurants where you can experience authentic Japanese nightlife that retains the original post-war charm. The area is quite safe but you should be mindful.
You might encounter some difficulty finding the place, but look for a big red lantern hanging at the entrance. It is a two-story building with counter seating on the first floor and tatami style seating on the second. Customers seated on the second floor will need to place an order through a pipe-type telephone. Dishes ordered will be delivered by the manual elevator. The restaurant has a retro ambience of the Showa era (1926-1989) with lively crowds contributing to the festive atmosphere.
Yakitori is reasonably priced, ranging from 180 yen to 200 yen per skewer. You can order a la carte, but, for first timers, we recommend the omakase style. Be mindful that the cook will continue to serve until you call a stop. Regular patrons enjoy the homemade tsukune (chicken meatball) shaped like a small hamburger. Other popular skewers include hearts, sasami (chicken breast fillets), and bonjiri (chicken tail).
You can only make a reservation for the second floor. Expect a long line of people waiting in front of the restaurant even before it opens. If you don’t want to wait your turn in line, let the employee know and they might agree to call you when they are able to serve you.
