Tonta is located within 10-minute walking distance from JR Takadanobaba Station, just one stop away from JR Shinjuku Station. Tonta is commonly cited as one of the outstanding tonkatsu restaurants in Tokyo. Seating is limited. There is counter seating for ten diners and two tables for Japanese-style floor seating.
Established in 1976, the restaurant is one of the most famous tonkatsu restaurants in Takadanobaba and, arguably, all of Tokyo. Takadanobaba is famous as a location for many tonkatsu restaurants. Ponta is open just four days a week and only during dinner hours. Because of its limited opening days and popularity, there is always a long line. The exterior of the restaurant looks like a ryotei (traditional high class Japanese restaurant), but the interior is more like a small izakaya.
Not long after placing an order, a waiter will bring sesame seeds in a mortar and pestle. Please grind the sesame seeds and add some Worcestershire sauce. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, combine it with ketchup in a small dish. The sesame flavor and the sauce pairs well with the pork cutlet.
We recommend the Toku Rosu Katsu Teishoku (Special Loin Cutlet Set Meal). The pork cutlet is slowly fried at a low temperature. The resulting batter is light and crispy and the texture is fluffy. The meat is juicy and tender. The pork cutlet is flanked by a generous pile of cabbage. The recommended way to eat it is to, first, enjoy the original flavor of the meat, then adjust to taste by adding a little bit of salt and/or black pepper. Finally, enjoy the meal with the homemade Worcestershire sauce. You will have three choices of miso soup: wakame seaweed, shijimi (freshwater clams), or tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup).
