Authentic Kyoto Cuisine in a Hidden Gem in Akasaka

Akasaka Eigetsu, a quiet kaiseki restaurant located on the fourth floor of a commercial building, is two blocks west of Sotobori-dori, Akasaka’s main thoroughfare. The restaurant is a mere five-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Akasaka Mitsuke Station. To enter, pass between the large noren (curtain) and slide the wooden-framed door.

Owner chef, Hidenori Iwasaki, acquired his refined techniques in Kyoto at the renowned “Ajihana” (now permanently closed) followed by the 5-star “Sumiya Ryokan.” With such great credentials, he confidently opened Akasaka Eigetsu in September 2010.

The restaurant serves an omakase course consisting of 12 to 13 dishes of seasonal vegetables and seafood. The various varieties of seafood dishes include: Otsukuri (sashimi), Hamo-no-Otoshi (parboiled pike conger), Kosode Sushi, Ayu-no-Shioyaki (salt-grilled sweetfish), Tai Meshi (seasoned rice cooked with red sea bream).

Chef Iwasaki makes best use of top-notch quality ingredients in order to bring out the delicate and subtle taste of the umami that is unique to kaiseki cuisines. Contents of the menu vary depending on the season, so may wish to inquire at the restaurant in advance of your visit.

There are a wide variety of alcoholic beverages, mainly Japanese sake, to pair with the dishes. The menu lists only a handful of sake types, so please ask chef Iwasaki or the okami (proprietress) for suggestions. Even sake aficionados may encounter delicious types they never knew existed.
