Dotonbori: Osaka’s Vibrant Heart
Dotonbori, located in Chuo Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, is an iconic entertainment district that embodies the spirit of Osaka. Its name comes from Yasui Doton, who invested his personal fortune to excavate the canal in 1612 during the Keicho era. Historically, the southern side was home to theaters, while the northern side featured an array of eateries catering to theatergoers. This division persists today, with the southern area now hosting numerous recreational facilities, including karaoke venues and shops, while the northern side boasts a succession of restaurants with the ostentatious signage characteristic of Osaka. The district is perpetually bustling with activity.
The famous Glico sign stands as Dotonbori’s preeminent landmark. Its proximity to Namba, the heart of Osaka, makes it a symbolic fixture for locals and a popular backdrop for tourist photos. The district also houses the renowned Kuidaore Taro mannequin and the Kani Doraku crab restaurant, both located within the Dotonbori shopping arcade.

Of particular note is Dotonbori Imai, an esteemed udon restaurant founded in 1941. Dotonbori is home to the Namba Grand Kagetsu, the headquarters of Yoshimoto Kogyo, a hub for Osaka’s comedians and manzai performers. The vibrant signage and neon lights adorning the banks of the Dotonbori Canal, coupled with the constant flow of pedestrians, have earned the district the nickname “Osaka’s Times Square.”
The area features numerous tourist attractions. The Tombori Riverwalk and Tombori River Cruise offer unique perspectives of Dotonbori’s lively streetscape from the water, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Osaka’s distinctive atmosphere. Furthermore, the Don Quijote Dotonbori store features the world’s first oblong Ferris wheel, the Ebisu Tower, providing patrons with an elegant opportunity to view Osaka’s bustling cityscape from above.
