Tsukiji Bunkajin is a short equidistant walk from either Tokyo Metro Higashi Ginza or Tsukiji Stations.
The name of the restaurant, Bunkajin, literally means cultural person. The name suggests a place where culture and people are intertwined. Bunkajin aims to be a place where everyone can relax while experiencing Japan’s traditional food culture. Matsuda opened the restaurant in 2013 after working for a soba restaurant called Shigekichi close to Ayase station in Tokyo.
Bunkajin is still relatively new but they mimic long-established, old-fashioned restaurants in that the menu is deceptively simple. High-quality buckwheat seeds are carefully selected from special farms throughout Japan.
Soba is handmade from grinding soba seeds on stone mills. Ingredients are purchased from the Toyosu Market every morning. Selection puts emphasis on fresh and high-quality ingredients that provide seasonal variety and taste.
Specializing in both hot and cold soba, the restaurant is frequented by locals who come throughout the year for the seasonal side dishes. The signature dish is the tofu soba with grated spicy daikon and radish sprouts.
While maintaining the soba culture tradition, Bunkajin keeps its faithful customers stimulated by periodically introducing original new menu items.
