Blossoming Identity: Discover Tokyo’s Captivating Flower Sculpture
In Tokyo’s Flower Plaza near Kokusai Tenjijo Station, you’ll find an impressive monolithic sculpture called “花” (flower). This artwork is located on the way from the station to Tokyo Big Sight, Japan’s largest exhibition hall. The Symbol Promenade Park, connecting Minato-ku Daiba, Koto-ku Aomi, and Ariake, houses this character sculpture.
The choice of the character “花” was made to evoke a strong sense of Japanese identity, in line with the theme of Flower Plaza. Standing at about 3 meters tall and weighing 3 tons, the sculpture is hard to miss. Flower Plaza opened in March 2020 and serves as a gateway to the charming Ariake district, showcasing the “flower” as a defining symbol of the park. Its purpose is to create a vibrant and captivating atmosphere, hosting exciting events and providing a sanctuary where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature.
While the sculpture’s artist is unknown, it was carefully planned and designed by the Bureau of Port and Harbor, with the copyright belonging to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
